Melissa started in photography as many do, capturing family photos on weekends while working full-time. She was an industrial engineer on the International Space Station Project when her friend asked if she’d consider doing photos at a local preschool.
Melissa had no idea what ‘school photography’ was about when she reached out to the preschool but when they said yes to her proposal, she decided to just do what she knew: Custom, interactive photoshoots.
She asked parents to register their kids and share a bit about their personalities ahead of the photoshoot. Taking a friend with her to help on the big day, Melissa spent the day playing with the children and creating a gallery of beautiful photos that really captured their personalities.
It wasn’t the typical sit, say cheese, and next type of school photos, and the parents and kids absolutely loved the upscale, custom experience. Melissa organized the galleries online so the parents could view and order multiple photos.
In that very first session, over 80% of the parents bought packages. They ordered large images to put on their walls and loved being able to select multiple poses in their custom package.
Melissa knew she was on to something. She started to look at how she could make that same process even better and more efficient. She explored training others who loved children and photography so they could do the same thing.
In 2009, she quit her job working with NASA and started working on building the systems she needed to franchise. A proof-of-concept location opened in 2012 and the first 2 franchise locations opened in 2013.
From there, the Spoiled Rotten Photography team has continued to grow, innovate, and improve into the beautiful, fun franchise family they are today!

We offer photography for families, K-12 schools, daycares, and preschools, but preschool pictures are our bread and butter and we’ve developed a signature approach to capture personality-packed portraits every time.
STEP 1: BOOKING
Elective Mini Sessions: Register your children on our website and tell us about them! What are their favorite things? Are they shy? Outgoing? Give us any information that you think would help us create a beautiful portrait.
Personality Portraits, Cap and Gown, or Yearbook Sessions:
For these sessions, we photograph every child so no sign-up is necessary.
STEP 2: WHAT TO WEAR
We recommend neutrals, solid colors, or very small prints. Be sure your child feels comfortable and avoid any bold patterns, big logos, or writing to keep the focus on their face.
STEP 3: PICTURE DAY
For elective mini-sessions you’ll choose the day you’d like to be photographed. For all other sessions your school will let you know which day to send your child’s picture outfit.
It’s always a good idea for your children to get plenty of sleep the night before their session. Note: Make sure you tell us when you sign up about any items that you are sending- so we’ll know to ask if your child shows up without the item!
STEP 4: ORDER ONLINE
Approximately 1 week after the session, you’ll receive an email with instructions to view and order your portraits. A typical proof set for indoor sessions will have 10-15 poses, and shorter non-sign up sessions will have at least 3 images to choose from! Order a la carte or choose from several packages with increasing discounts for larger packages.
STEP 5: PICK UP
Approximately 4 weeks after the ordering period, portraits are delivered to your school office for you to pick up. If you’d like your portraits shipped to your home, please check the home shipping option when ordering. Otherwise, your order will be delivered to the facility where the images were made.
